ISSF World Cup : Indian Shooters Harassed By Organisers
By ugesh sarkar, Section Sports & Leisure
Posted on Mon May 17, 2010 at 03:53:09 AM EST
In a shocking incident, the Indian shooting contingent was harassed by the organisers of the ISSF World Cup in Dorset, UK which forced the team manager M Padmanabhan to shot off a letter to the High Commission in London.
In his letter to the Indian High Commissioner in London, Padmanabhan brought to light the frequent harassment the shooters encountered.
He said ace trap shooter and Commonwealth Games gold medallist Manavjit Singh Sandhu was insulted by the transport supervisor Mike, who asked the Olympian to get off the bus.
"Our Indian shooters were in the process of boarding the bus from the ranges to the official hotel when the driver slammed the door shut on the Indian shooter waiting outside and left him at the range. When the other shooters on the bus strongly objected, the driver turned back and went to the supervisor of the transport dept, Mr Mike."
"Mr Mike then returned to the bus and yelled and screamed at our shooters and insulted them. He was very very rude and threatened the team with dire circumstances. He then addressed our Indian World Champion and Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna, Mr Manavjit Singh and told him to get off the bus. He refused saying that the bus was the official transport and not his personal vehicle. Mr. Mike then threatened him by saying that the Indian Team will not be allowed to take the bus tomorrow morning," Padmanabhan wrote in his letter to the High Commission.

20 Years Later, PCB Finally Clears Plan For Sports Complex
By sakshi sinha, Section Sports & Leisure
Posted on Wed Apr 21, 2010 at 02:29:39 AM EST
The Pune Cantonment Board (PCB) has cleared a proposal, which was stuck for nearly 20 years, to construct a sports complex at Golibar Maidan. The Rs 22-crore project has a 1,000-metre athletic track for practising sprint race and also a spacious football ground for the soccer lovers.
According to officials, the PCB, at a board meeting held last month, cleared the proposal to construct a sports complex at Golibar Maidan near the cantonment board's main office. The state-of-art complex will have a spectators stadium, a commercial complex, a football ground and a pitch to only practice cricket.
"The three-acre sports complex will not have a cricket ground as it is short of area but has a football ground. You cannot have cricket matches here, but can hold practice sessions," said the officials.
Confirming that the proposal for the sports complex has been cleared by the PCB last month, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the PCB Rachel Koshey said that the proposal has been sent to the Southern Command for approval.
The officials said that the PCB was not able to decide on the sports complex even as there was a demand from the residents in cantonment area that children and youth should be provided a facility where they can play. The delay happened because the PCB was not able to corner a deal that was financially viable.

15 Days Of Games To Help Us For 15 yrs: Suresh Kalmadi In An Interview
By ugesh sarkar, Section Sports & Leisure
Posted on Sun Mar 28, 2010 at 02:21:08 AM EST
Suresh Kalmadi, chairman of the 2010 Commonwealth Games Organising Committee, in an exclusive interview tells TOI that the legacy of the Games will be enjoyed by the capital for years and may even help the country win the Olympic bid. He underlines friendship through sports and business opportunities as the other gains. Some excerpts:
There is too much negative energy flowing around Commonwealth Games. Why is this happening?
There is no negative energy. We are all busy preparing for the Games because it will leave Delhi with a strong legacy. In terms of infrastructure, the face of Delhi will change. We are all working together to make the Games a success. All Metro lines will be completed and Delhi airport will be the fourth best in the world. The Games will be on for 15 days but it will help the city for the next 15 years. It will take Delhi years ahead. It will boost the city's tourism, and who knows, we might win the Olympic bid one day if we are able to successfully conduct the event! In fact, Perry Crosswhite (head of the Australian Commonwealth Games Association), who was our biggest critic, said Delhi would have a better Games than the one at Melbourne in 2006.
The Nehru stadium as well as some others have missed deadlines several times. When will these be ready?
Nehru stadium was supposed to be ready in October last year, but the deadline was extended first to December and then to March. I am confident that all pending work will be completed by June 30. This is what sports minister MS Gill has also told Parliament. Meanwhile, the venues for hockey, archery, boxing and shooting are among the best in the world. Even last week, 71 chef-de-missions visited Delhi and expressed happiness over the security aspect.
When the Commonwealth shooting event took place, a lot of commuters got stuck in big traffic jams due to security checks. Will Delhiites face a similar situation during the Games?
Due to the Pune blast, security measures were strict during the shooting event. However, we are constantly working with other departments to make the Games hassle-free for all. In fact, during the Games, I hope the fans will be allowed to carry their cameras and cellphones.

Alarm Over Delhi Commonwealth Games Deepens
By ugesh sarkar, Section Sports & Leisure
Posted on Tue Mar 23, 2010 at 09:00:25 PM EST
A New Zealander who heads the Commonwealth Games is expressing alarm over the state of facilities at the Delhi games due to open in seven months.
Agence France Presse (AFP) reports that the partially completed main stadium is a messy building site and the swimming complex a pile of rubble.
The pending monsoon is expected to slow things further.
"The deadlines are being pushed further every time," New Zealander Mike Hooper, chief executive of the London-based Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF), which owns and controls the Games, told AFP.
"In October last year, we were told most of the venues will be ready by December, except the Jawaharlal Nehru and swimming stadiums which they said would be ready by March. Now that deadline has shifted to June.
"We struggle to understand that. If the venue construction programme does not adhere to what are self-imposed deadlines now, it will impact adversely the operational obligations."
Earlier in the month Games Federation president Michael Fennell also expressed concern.

Games Get A Reality Twist, CWG Talent-Hunt Show To Find Nation's Future Sports Stars
By ugesh sarkar, Section Sports & Leisure

EVERYONE'S INVITED Commonwealth Games talent-hunt show to find nation's future sports stars
This summer, get ready for the biggest reality pro- gramme ever to hit your TV screens--the Commonwealth Games talent-hunt show.
The organisers of the show- piece event, now just six months away, are in talks with TV chan- nels to produce a reality show based on a hunt to find the next sporting superstars hidden in the country's nooks and corners. The nationwide search will have most of the Olympic sports, mainly outdoor ones, and inv- olve teams from CGW organis- ers with local sports authorities to hold trials in your neighbour- hoods in four corners of the country.
"It will bring India's pres- ent champion athletes closer to the people. It will invite everyone to come and play.
And it will help identify the future talent," Suresh Kalmadi, chairman, CWG Organising Committee, said. This will not only fish out the unknown athletes but also turn the whole process --from trials to selections to finals--into a daily fix of reality TV, complete with behind-the-scenes drama.
Everyone can participate, irrespective of age and back- ground. Only the winners in each category will clear the var- ious selection levels.
"The Games will leave a lega- cy of the Olympic sports in a land of cricket and more crick- et," he said.

Villages To Get Sports Facilities
By akansha, Section Sports & Leisure
Posted on Thu Mar 11, 2010 at 02:01:38 AM EST
To bridge the wide urban-rural gap with regards to sports facilities, the state Ministry of Sports and Youth Affairs, under the Panchayat Yuva Krida aur Khel Abhiyaan, will soon launch a scheme to provide basic sports infrastructure in every village of the state.
The government has already identified 2,689 villages and is likely to launch the scheme by the end of this month. It will spend Rs 30 crore in the first year of this five-year scheme.
Giving the details, Suresh Shetty, Minister of Sports and Youth Affairs, said, "Under the scheme, every village will have a playground. The respective zilla parishad will be asked to allot land for the purpose and we will give a onetime seed capital."
According to the plan, 2,689 village panchayats in 35 blocks will be covered in the first year. Seventy-five per cent of the funds will come from the Centre while the state will contribute the rest of the amount.
Shetty said, "The aim is to encourage sports through block and district-level sports tournaments. Cities have 75 per cent of the sports infrastructure which serves only 30 per cent of the population. A majority of the population in villages is deprived of the benefits."
The state has so far received Rs 9.70 crore from the Centre for the project. Significantly, Mumbai and Mumbai suburban districts have been excluded from this action plan as these districts do not have zilla parishads.

Swimming And Hockey Events Will Begin From September 23
By akansha, Section Sports & Leisure
Posted on Sat Sep 19, 2009 at 03:48:34 AM EST
Here's another flip-flop by the authorities. After initially saying that no sports event will be allowed in view of the Influenza A H1N1 situation, the district sports office on Thursday said the sports calendar will unfold from this month.
District sports officer Rajesh Bagul told DNA that all sports events will be held with swimming and hockey events getting underway simultaneously at the Tilak Tank and Pashan and Pimpri-Chinchwad polygrass facility respectively from September 23.
"The district collector, after a meeting on Thursday, gave us the go ahead to organise the sports competitions,'' Bagul said, explaining this was necessary as for some disciplines, the national level competitions are scheduled in the first and second week of October. "If we don't conduct the district level competitions now, then the students may miss the opportunity to participate in the nationals," he said.
According to Bagul, school authorities and parents accompanying the children will have to give an undertaking that they will be responsible for any eventuality with regards to H1N1.
Students from standard X and XII participating in these games get 25 additional marks in the examination.

HC Tells PMC To Use Nehru Stadium Land For Sports Only
By akansha, Section Sports & Leisure
Posted on Fri Aug 28, 2009 at 02:28:40 AM EST
The Bombay High Court (HC) has directed the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) to use the land on which the Nehru stadium and the Ganesh Kala Krida Manch stand for sports purposes only.
Justices RM Savant and SB Mhase issued the order on Friday while hearing a writ petition filed by the Club of Maharashtra (CoM), co-owners of the land along with the Town Hall Commitee. The land has been leased to the PMC on the condition that it would be used only for sports purposes.
After the Nehru stadium was rented for a stage show and other activities earlier this year, the CoM filed a writ petition alleging breach of the original tri-party agreement between the CoM, the Town Hall Commitee and the PMC.
Hearing the writ petition, Justices Savant and Mhase stated: "After going through the record and the reply affidavit filed by the Respondent No. 1 (PMC), it is clear that the land in question is reserved for a playground and the petitioners and other owners of the property have handed over the possession of the said property on lease basis to the Respondent No. 1 for the purposes of being utilised as a playground. It is also an undisputed fact that the said premises are being used for other purposes, though occasionally the same is used for playground activities."
"....We cannot lose sight of the fact that in urban areas there is already a paucity of playgrounds. We, therefore, direct the Respondent No. 1 that they (PMC) shall not utilise the said land except as a playground and for sports activities either indoor or outdoor. All other activities would be expressly prohibited."

No Need For F1 In India: Sports Ministry
By ugesh sarkar, Section Sports & Leisure
Posted on Mon Aug 24, 2009 at 11:31:03 PM EST
At a time when Formula One is gaining popularity across the world, the sports ministry in India has come out with a shocker, refusing to accept it as a sport.
According to reports in certain sections of the media, the officials in the sports ministry have written a letter to the promoters of Formula One in India, JPSK Sports, saying that organising F1 races in India will not have any impact on the development of sports in the country.
JPSK had reportedly sought a remittance of around 177 crores from the ministry to be paid to the Formula One Administration for organising F1 race in India.
According to officials in the sports ministry, the money can be used for development of various disciplines rather that spending it on Formula One, which does not have a significant following in the country.
"F1 is not purely sports. It is entertainment and this venture by JKSP is a commercial initiative," a ministry source was quoted as saying by a leading newspaper.
"The proposed F1 race does not satisfy conditions which focus on human endeavour for excelling in competition with others, keeping in view the whole sports movement from Olympics downwards," said the source.
